Introducing... Tanka is a sister course to the more established "Introducing... Haiku". For more about tanka, including the distinction between haiku and tanka, click here. Thank you for your interest in Call of the Page courses.
Start Date: Tuesday 4th May 2021
End Date: Tuesday 29th June 2021
Format: Email/webpage based (asynchronous). Participants work individually on written assignments and tutor feedback is sent as a group email, for shared learning.
Level: This course is designed to be gentle enough for complete beginners (at tanka, or at creative writing), but at the same time stimulating enough to introduce tanka as a new form to those who are already writing poetry or prose. It's also a "back to what we first loved about tanka" for writers who would enjoy a reset.
No of Assignments and Feedback: 3
Group Size: up to 6 1 place available
Course Description: Participants are sent introductory materials on the start date, which will include the first assignment briefing. We'll engage with tanka as a reader, to better understand the potential of this succinct five-line form. Using gentle and evocative prose exercises we'll find ways in to writing our own tanka. By the third and final assignment (or sooner if you are ready) we'll have built up to writing a complete tanka poem. There'll be feedback from the tutors on the prose exercises, line exercises, and the complete poems, in a safe and nurturing atmosphere. By the end of the course you should have up to three tanka, and an inspiring foundation on which to move forward with your writing.
Tutors: Alan Summers (tanka) & Karen Hoy (pre-tanka exercises)
Cost: £150 (approximately US$206)
