We love video feedback sessions! We get to "meet" our students, and the back and forth discussion around your poetry can be really productive. Some of our clients have regular video sessions to discuss ongoing work, and others come to us for one-off sessions, for instance to help overcome an issue they have on their writing, or for clarification on a point of understanding around Japanese forms in the English language. Sometimes clients who come to us for written tutoring find an occasional video meet helpful to consolidate what has been discussed in writing. Whatever the reason, welcome to our booking page.
These sessions are for all levels of writers, from curious beginner to advanced writers polishing a collection. Alan Summers, our lead tutor, specialises in all of the forms that have come out of Japan (haiku, senryū, tanka, haibun) and looks forward to talking to you about your work.
It's helpful if you could email at least some of the work you wish to discuss ahead. Ten minutes before your session is fine, so that Alan has your most recent version to hand. Note: if you would prefer to have written feedback on your work, you can submit it to us at this link.
Sessions are offered by Skype or by Zoom.
We love Zoom for... moments when we have lots of people together in a session. We hold occasional events and workshops in this way, for multiple participants. We can also run these one-to-one video sessions by Zoom, but...
We love Skype for... one-to-ones!
Why?
1) Because Skype is instant. We simply Skype call you bang on the hour at the beginning of the session. It's quicker to hang up too. Which means you get a full hour, with no lagging as you wait for the links to come good and be "let in".
Only one of us at Call of the Page can use the Call of the Page Zoom account at once. requires our admin to send, and you to receive, a link.
Call of the Page is a small but international organisation! We have clients from all five continents. Therefore we work with different time zones. If you are booking with us from outside the United Kingdom, it's worth a moment to explain and assure you about the booking form below!
Depending on where you are in the world, you will see the slots advertised at different times. Some of them might seem ridiculous! That's because you are looking at a British timetable adjusted to your local time. (You may be in California, for instance, wondering why we are appearing to offer sessions at 4am in the morning). But we've tried to work the timetable so that wherever you are, there are some times you can see that should work for you. If, for example, a slot is showing for 10am, that is for 10am your time.
The fees for sessions with Alan are in UK pounds, but this will be automatically converted by your card provider or Paypal account to your local currency. For an idea of how much you will be paying in your local currency, you will find a handy currency converter next to the booking form.

Call of the Page tutor Alan Summers is available for one-to-one tuition in haiku, senryu, haibun and tanka. Most of our tuition is given via email or Skype, or a combination of these. We have recently updated how our one-to-ones run, which we hope will make it easier to book, and easier to keep tabs on if you wish to have a flexibly one-to-one account with us.
With a fixed session, you can book a minimum of one hour's tuition. Our preferred method is Skype or FaceTime, as this most closely replicates a face-to-face one-to-one, and enables an exchange of feedback, questions, and development of your work in real time. We also feel this represents best value if you are on a budget, as you are able to also directly take down your own notes, saving on tutor time. If you can stretch to a 75 minute session, this is also good value as sometimes an hour seems to cut off in mid-flow!
We put aside time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for video feedback sessions. You can check the upcoming available slots and book them on the video feedback bookings page. If these times do not work for you, please contact us with two or three time suggestions and we'll be pleased to arrange a session time that works. Please note we are in the European time zones,
If you would prefer purely written feedback on your work, then please make a payment via our special payments page for the amount of time you would like. Please send a minimum of three poems (but up to six per hour booked, for less intense feedback) and as many questions as you would like about specific aspects of your work, or about the Japanese poetry forms in English.
If you book three hours or more, you automatically qualify for a one-to-one account to be opened for you.
Alan Summers is available for one-to-one tuition, in person, by email, post, telephone, Skype, or a combination of these. One-to-one sessions are tailored to suit you, either with Alan setting assignments, or simply giving feedback on your drafts of haiku, tanka or the other Japanese forms.
We have a flexible account system, and one-to-one students can send as little or as much work as they like at any time. Any time paid for but not used will roll over and be held for the student's next session.
We normally aim to address students' work within one week of their sending it to us - but please email us first at admin@callofthepage.org to check on availability and find out more about how the one-to-ones work. We can normally schedule Skype sessions within two or three days. We'd be happy to discuss which method of feedback might suit you best.
