Poets naturally want to control their work, but so do photographers and artists. Where does that leave us if we wish to illustrate our poem online (on a website, blog, or social media, or even in a journal) with someone else's visual work? What's okay, what isn't? How do we navigate this?

Workshop Content
In this interactive workshop, for poets of all genres, we'll learn about responsible and respectful picture use, and the truth about free use (including some great examples of picture resources that are truly free for you to use). We'll look at case studies examining why some creators and galleries are less willing to share, while others make their visual works freely accessible to be used by others online. Participants are invited to bring their "Is this okay?" questions about artworks they'd like to use.
We'll look at issues of fairness – as to how we'd like our own art to be treated – and will discuss how we can turn this into a win-win situation for both poets, and the owners and creators of images.
Workshop Leader
Karen Hoy first became oddly fascinated by image copyright when working as a production assistant on a documentary about the artist Monet for PBS. She is not a lawyer but has had to navigate the grey areas as far as possible without one! Even before AI, her interest has been in the ethics of how we use each other's work as well as the mechanics of copyright.
