Tanka Playback

Our first video feedback tanka course is here! Video and audio combined is a great way for Alan to comment on your tanka poems, allowing him to hone in really clearly on specific lines and words.

Start Date:  Thursday 8th January 2026

End Date:  Wednesday 6th March 2026

Format: Not live (asynchronous). Participants work individually on written assignments in their own time, and submit them according to the course calendar provided. For each of the assignments, each group member will then be given access to the same video, which includes everyone's assignment, in video and audio, and all of the tutor's feedback for the group. This is the first time we are running this course, but we anticipate each of these videos lasting between 80 and 120 minutes.

Level: Suitable for those who have already read and written some tanka and wish to continue their writing with in-depth feedback (which is supplied in video format to the group in a single video). More experienced tanka writers are also very welcome, and we expect this to be a mixed experience (and very interesting!) group.

Access Note: We want this course, and its video content, to be accessible to those with visual or hearing impairments. Please email us if this applies to you, and we will make sure you are catered for.

No. of Assignments and Feedback:  3

Group Size:  up to 5 (4 places left)

Course Description: At the start of every assignment, participants will be offered an optional prompt, via private pages on the Call of the Page website, from which to write and submit their tanka. The first assignment asks for one tanka only, and the second and third assignments are for two tanka. From assignment two onwards, there is an option to send a rewrite of a previous tanka for further feedback, in place of one of the new ones. Nine to ten days after the submission date (we allow a little longer than usual tanka feedback, for final video edits), the feedback video will be sent to the group for download and study.

At the end of the course, participants will have between 4 and 6 tanka (depending on how many rewrites are sent rather than new poems). Participants will also have access to the 3 videos, which they can continue to watch again in their own time.

Things to know: The course assumes you are already familiar with tanka, as it works via prompts rather than technical instruction before the feedback. But as long as you have some familiarity and experience the course should suit you!
