FULLY BOOKED
Start Date: Thursday January 24th 2019
End Date: Thursday April 11th 2019
Level: This is an advanced course, suitable for those who already have a small body of work of haiku.
No. of Assignments and Feedback: 4
Group Size: up to 5
Course Description: In this advanced course, we explore how elements of sound - like rhythm, pitch, key, and choice of consonant and vowel sounds - affect the success of haiku poems, whether they are read out loud, or heard in our minds as we read silently from the page.
Over four sessions (rather than the usual three) we will look at these elements. We will write at least one new poem for each assignment, with sound analysis given on at least poem each time, by former sound recordist and consultant Karen Hoy, alongside short comments from the writing tutor Alan Summers. Participants will also review some of the poems from their existing body of work, to explore how sound has played a part in their success.
Participants will be encouraged to record the new poems they write for the course, and submit them as a sound file as well as in writing. Support and instructions for the technical aspects of this will be given.
Please note, while this course may make references to music as we study the sound aspects of haiku, it does not include any elements of setting haiku to music. But we do look at the musicality of language as it is written and spoken. Thank you!
